The
success of a dental implant and its ability to support
a dental restoration is very much dependent upon how
much bone is available in the site where the implant
is placed.
There are lots of factors that affect the
bone volume including periodontal diseases, trauma and
infections. It is not unusual to open up a site in the
mouth for implant placement and find that some of the
critical supporting bone is missing. Replacing missing
bone or adding to the existing bone is very often essential
to the success of a dental implant and the ensuing restoration (supporting
crowns).
We at GUMS N SMILES have the latest, state of
art techniques available to replace
missing bone.Using these techniques we can increase
the height of bone, the width of bone and fill in all
sorts of defects that develop when teeth are lost.
SINUS
LIFT is one of the procedures used to increase the
availability of bone for doing maxillary (upper jaw)
implants. Sinus lift or sinus augmentation is an implantologist
or a periodontist executed procedure, to increase the
amount of bone in the molar area of the upper arch in
order to prepare it for the insertion of one or more
dental implants.
Sometimes the sinuses are enlarged and intrude on the
areas where we want to place dental implants
.It can also happen because of resorption
of the bone caused due to tooth extraction.
.If the back teeth in the jaw are not replaced
in time after extractions, sinuses tend to enlarge, thereby
resorbing available bone for the placement of implants
at a later stage.
A
dental implant cannot be placed in such areas as there
would be no bone holding it in place. This is when doing
a sinus lift gets important. It could be done in a conservative
manner (indirect sinus lift) or an elaborate surgery (direct
sinus lift), depending upon the increase in the height
or the width of bone that is required.
PREPARATION
A thorough evaluation is done by the implantologists
at GUMS N SMILES before proceeding with any form
of treatment. This includes XRAYS to study the
anatomy of your jaws and sinuses. A CT (computed tomography) SCAN is also advised to accurately measure the
height and width of your existing bone and evaluate
the health of your sinuses.

PROCEDURE
In order to carryout a sinus lift, there can be the
use of either bone tissue originating from
the patients body (autogenous bone) or that of synthetic
nature (allogenous bone.. bone in a bottle) which is more
commonly used and can also stimulate the formation of
new bone material.
So
for doing a Direct lift, we merely open up the side of
the sinus and raise the bottom portion of the sinus. The
area is then grafted with bone and tissues are stiched
shut. We can then go back, 4-6 months later and place
an dental implant in solid bone.
A conservative way would be what is called Indirect
Sinus Lift. This procedure or the osteotome lift is
done without actually opening the sinus. The sinus is
gently elevated through the site where the implant is
to be placed. Healing and implant integration then proceed
in a normal manner.
The doctors at GUMS N SMILES after a thorough
evaluation would be able to guide you for the treatment
plan and procedure required.
